The first months of your new baby’s life are called the “fourth trimester”. Here are some tips from a fellow mommy and newborn care specialist to help your baby adjust to this new world by giving them some familiar surroundings from their time in the womb.
1- Feed & sleep on demand. Allow your baby to dictate how much sleep and how much food they need.
2- Use a sound/ 'brown' (not white) noise machine. The womb was loud!
3- Black-out shades in the nursery- this bright world is overstimulating and can make it hard to sleep!
4- Swaddle your baby. The wall of the womb is no longer surrounding your baby’s arms. They need help controlling their arms to allow them to feel secure and safe until they develop enough to control them on their own. Without this help, you'll find that they often wake themselves from their own startle reflex, also known as the Moro Reflex, that is very present and very strong in the first months of life.
5- Watch the clock. 60-90 minutes is the most time newborns can be awake without becoming fussy and overtired/more difficult to put to sleep.
6- Try to maintain a bedtime/nap routine. An example is as follows:
Go to the room they will sleep in. Turn on the noise machine, change their diaper and swaddle them. They may need some nursing/feeding or pacifier to get them down to sleep. Then try and practice putting them into their beds sleepy but still awake whenever possible.
Good sleep habits early on will pave the way for a happy healthy well-rested parent and baby.
REMEMBER: No other baby is exactly like yours. Follow your unique baby’s sleeping, eating, and awake-time patterns.
